This short COMMUNITY BASED program brings you to the ethnic minorities of northern THAILAND. The start of this package is in CHIANG MAI and is ideal for a HOLIDAY in northern THAILAND with focus on the COMMUNITY.

 
Northern THAILAND counts numerous ethnic minorities. Many of them still live in harmony with their environment and according to their ancient traditions. Some still practice animism and speak their own dialect. It is namely the case of the HMONG
 
Hmong people are native from Southern China provinces and started spreading out to Vietnam, Lao, Thailand, as from the 18 century. It is believed that the whole Hmong population living on earth would reach about 4.000.000 individuals
 
Many western people wrongly believe that ethnic minorities living in Thailand are no longer genuine, which is not true… This affirmation is based on the mass market tourists’ thoughts, who only get a global glimpse of Thailand during their trip… But if one ventures off the beaten tracks, and takes time to get to the real communities, one will discover a hidden universe, where many locals still wear traditional clothes and still live in accordance to their own traditions.
 
This short program will bring you through the fields where genuine Hmong communities cultivate their vegetables. We will bring you to a ‘Royal Project’ where you will understand the importance of agrarian reforms undertaken decades ago, by the King Bhumibol… In that time, poppy fields were eradicated from Northern Mountains and replaced by clean crops, for the best sake of all these communities.
This ‘agro-tourism’ program is a short but very interesting introduction for those keen to discover real rural life in a secluded area of Chiangmai province

PROGRAM

DAY: 1 (Departure everyday)

Meals:  LUNCH / DINNER
- 09:00: Pick-up by your English speaking guide from Train station, Airport or any hotel in the center of Chaingmai. Transfer to the Doi Pui Mountains chain, about 1 hour Northern Chiangmai.
- 10:00: Arrival at the Hmong Hilltribe Lodge, (where you will spend the night). You let your luggage under custody and leave the valley by local truck to go uphill with your English speaking guide and your local Hmong guide. You will first visit a royal project where strawberries and raspberries are cultivated. You will observe life in the village and push afterwards up to the top of the mountain.
- 12:00: You will enjoy your lunch overlooking the whole valley and served by the personal of the community, cooking there organic products cultivated in the Royal Project Agriculture Center.
- 13:00: You will start a soft trek downhill, passing through fields and villages, and will observe Hmong farmers, working in their fields. You will halt here and there to admire the breathtaking scenic views all around you.
- 16:00: (Approximately) Arrival at the Hmong Village, where you observe locals in their daily activity
- 17:00: Arrival at the Hmong Hill Tribe Lodge - Check-in – Rest of the afternoon at leisure, at the swimming pool or in room.
- 19:30: (approximately) Dinner is served in the lodge, followed by a representation of traditional Hmong dances performed by the villagers next door… You will probably recognize some of the villagers you have met earlier in the fields, proudly presenting their traditional dances for the public of the lodge – Overnight
 
 
 

DAY 2 

MEALS: BREAKFAST
    Hearty breakfast served in the lodge. 
- 10:00: Your car and driver will come to fetch you and transfer you back to Chiangmai
- 11:00 (Approximately) You will be dropped-off at the train station, the airport or at your hotel in the center of Chiangmai – End of the program.
 
For any afternoon departure from Chiangmai, the walk through fields and villages will be postponed to the day after (morning including lunch) - Back to Chiangmai by end afternoon
