SAILING UP THE ‘RIVER KWAI’

      NS.TRAVEL invites you onboard the ‘RV.River Kwai’ for a unique journey following twists and turns of worldwide known ‘River Kwai’. You will sail smoothly through Thai jungle on a superb massive teak wooden ship, similar to those sailing on Irrawaddy River.

 
Subtle blend of comfort, history, nature and relax, NS.TRAVEL will make you discover the famous ‘Bridge over River Kwai’ as well as other testimonies of WWII. You will discover: Chinese pagoda, Khmer temple or Thai Buddhist temple and will meet ethnic minorities.

PROGRAM

DAY 1: Monday

JOURNEY: Bangkok-Kanchanaburi-Ban Kao
MEALS: Lunch / Dinner
- 07:00: Pick-up in main hotels located in downtown Bangkok and departure in air-conditioned coach to Kanchanaburi. 
- 09:00: Short stop on the way to visit the highest Chedi in Thailand called “Phra Pathom Chedi” which is also the largest pagoda in Southeast Asia.
- 10:30: Visit the ‘Khao Noi Cave Temple’ (Wat Tham Khao Noi) located on the west bank of the River Kwai. The monastery was constructed on a hill, decorated in Chinese style. From the top of the monastery, one can observe the beautiful scenery of Kanchanaburi and its mountainous horizon. Afterwards, stop at the ‘Tiger Cave Temple’ (Wat Tham Sua) nearby. The big Buddha image and pagoda of this temple are worshiped by all Buddhists throughout Thailand.
- 11:30: The journey continues up to Kanchanaburi. Stop to visit the JEATH War Museum. It features a realistic depiction of life in a prisoner camp, giving us a good idea of the harsh and cruel living conditions, p.o.w had to go through. Tools, bombs, photographs, original drawings, etc, are the many testimonies gathered in the museum relating this sad episode of WWII.
- 12:30: Guests embark on ‘RV River Kwai’ at ‘Nong Ya’ dock.
- 13:00: Lunch on board while cruising smoothly Kwai Noi River.
- 14:30: Stop at ‘Wat Tham Khaopoon’. Visit this Buddhist temple, which was used during WWII as a prisoner camp. One can admire a middle cave containing stalactites and stalagmites and many remarkable Buddha images. Behind the temple, enjoy a marvelous view down on the valley.
- 15:00: Proceed with a visit at ‘Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park’, located in the ‘Kanchanaburi Agriculture College’. This place is known as "Stone Garden", covering 200 rai (96 acres). Plenty of stones, having different sizes and shapes (some similar to animals), scatter across in the whole park.
- 16:30: Guests return to the boat and carry on the journey upriver to ‘Wang Pla Moo’ bridge.
 

DAY 2: Tuesday 

JOURNEY: Ban Kao - Sai Yok
MEALS: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Breakfast on board, while cruising smoothly upriver, towards ‘Muang Singh’. 
- 10:00: Stop for a visit of the historical park sheltering the ‘Prasat Muang Singh’ (Khmer temple from the late Lopburi period – 700-800 years ago). The ruins of this temple, remind us how big was the Khmer Empire, and how widespread it was, far away from Cambodia. The ancient border town of ‘Muang Singh’ (City of the Lions), was probably used as a trading post. 
- 11:00: Guests will continue the journey by coach to ‘Thakilen’ Train Station. 
- 11:47: Guests get on board the old local train to ‘Saphan Tham Krasae’, passing over the long wooden viaduct. 
- 12:02: Arrival at ‘Saphan Tham Krasae’. There, a stop is foreseen to visit the ‘Krasae Cave’ located on the banks of the river. The spot makes an ideal point of view. The cavern shelters a Buddha image. 
- 12:30: Guests continue by coach, with a short stop at ‘Sai Yok Elephant Village’, located on the right bank of Kwai Noi River (upriver from ‘Wang Pho Bridge’). (Optional: half an hour elephant riding through the jungle and along the ‘Kwai Noi’ river – 300Thb per person). 
- 14:00: Lunch on board while cruising upriver. Afternoon is fully at leisure (Optional: 1 hour Thai traditional massage – 500Thb per person). 
- 19:30: Dinner and overnight on board near the ‘Resotel’. (Optional: 45 minutes Mon dances performance – 150Thb per person). Overnight on board.
 

DAY 3: Wednesday 

JOURNEY: Sai Yok - Sai Yok Yai - Ban Hin Dad 
MEALS: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Breakfast on board. 
- 09:00: From the landing stage, walk uphill to visit ‘Kaeng Lava Cave’. This cave features admirable stone draperies and superb concretions in large chambers.
- 10:30: Cruise upriver to ‘Ban Haad Ngiu’, followed by a short journey by coach to ‘Hell Fire Pass’, (Stony mountain cut by prisoners of war, to lay tracks of the Death Railway). The destroyed railroad leads to ‘Hin Tok’ bridge and ‘Konyu’ cutting. There, a tablet commemorates the Calvary of p.o.w, forced to achieve a tedious and painful job in horrible conditions. The memorial complex (Hin Lek Fai) was settled in memory of the Allied Prisoners of War and conscripted from India, Burma, Malaysia a.s.o, who suffered and died during the construction of the railway. Guests go back to the boat at ‘Kaeng Pa Lorm’. 
- 13:30: Lunch on board while cruising upriver, followed by a journey to ‘Sai Yok Yai’ waterfalls. The afternoon is at leisure on the boat. 
- 15:30: Stop for a visit at a school nearby the banks of ‘Kwai Noi’ river, which was built under the patronage of H.R.H. Crown Princess Sirindhorn, to welcome refugee’s children. 
- 16:30: Back on the boat and carry on cruising smoothly upriver. 
- 19:00: Farewell Dinner and overnight on board at ‘Daowadueng Bridge’.
 

DAY 4: Thursday 

JOURNEY: Ban Hin Dad – Kanchanaburi - Bangkok 
MEALS: Breakfast / Lunch
- 07:00: Offering food to monks (gaining merits, according to Thai tradition) at a temple in the vicinity. 
- 08:30: Breakfast on board.
- 10:00: Guests will disembark and go back to Kanchanaburi by coach. On the way, a stop is foreseen to visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Center Museum, an interactive museum which is a remarkable research & information centre, dedicated to the story of the Thailand-Burma Railway. Guests will also visit the ‘Donrak War Cemetery’, where 6,982 allied prisoners of war were buried. They all died during the construction of the “Death Railway”.
Journey continues to the worldwide known bridge over the River Kwai. The iron bridge over ‘Kwai Yai’ river was a crucial part of the Death Railway. It was built in about 16 months, by allied prisoners of war and Asian conscripts. The bridge was afterwards destroyed during allied bombing raids, by the end of World War II. But it was later rebuilt by Japanese, as war reparations. 
- 13:00: Lunch at ‘River Kwai’ Restaurant, next to the bridge. 
- 14:00: End journey by air-conditioned coach to Bangkok. 
- 18:00: Arrival in Bangkok and transfer to your hotel or to Bangkok Airport
