LIVING WITH ETHNIC MINORITIES IN MAE HONG SON

Enjoy our COMMUNITY BASED program in MAE HONG SON in northern THAILAND. This unique experience goes beyond the mere concept of ‘Home Stay’. It is based on a real cultural interchange and a mutual learning relationship between the visitor and the local population. It binds people, facilitates respect, enable mind’s opening and encourages tolerance. It brings men together and unites them in a common approach of knowing the other.

You will be totally integrated to the family hosting you, being Shan and Black Lahu. You will wake up early morning in a village surrounded by paddy fields and lime stone mountains… The whole day your hosts will make you fall in love with their village, their life and traditions as well as the magnificent nature all around. You will enjoy the natural pace of the place you live in, far from hassle, from consuming and still preserved from modern influences. Evening will be animated by shadows playing with candles under the stars and the moon. Living such an experience in Ban Jabo and Ban Mae Lana, is experiencing a mere moment of poetry.

This is a unique opportunity for visitors to have a deep insight into the life of two distinct hill communities, the Black Lahu and Shan peoples, who live side by side in an area of mountains, verdant forests and fertile rice valleys. Local people in both communities live according to ancient traditions. Various activities are offered while staying in the communities, including seeing how local crafts and musical instruments are hand-crafted from bamboo, hiking through the mountains to visit prehistoric caves, exploring local forest conservation areas, having a go at rice farming and enjoying cooking and eating local ethnic foods. Activities are lead by local community guides, which gives guests an unequaled opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature, as well as to learn about the harmonious relationship between local people and their environment

Most of the inhabitants of ethnic communities live according to the principles of auto-sufficiency. Hence, community based tourism helps them to make durable their life model thanks to this additional revenue. It contributes as well fixing the new generations in the village who do not feel any longer the necessity of migrating to Chiangmai or Bangkok for economical reasons. They keep intact their spirit of solidarity, their respect to the nature and their traditions, and they avoid falling into the many traps or our consuming societies, namely the ‘individualism’.
