BIKING AFTER GHOSTS OF SIAM

This program is a totally new concept inspired by the action day for environment organized in 181 countries on the 24 of October in 2009 during the Copenhagen Climate Conference.

Some scientists pretend that the quantity of CO² released in the atmosphere should not go over 350 particle per million. Beyond this norm, negative effects can be feared on Humans’ health. It is however reported that a threshold of 387 particles was reach in 2009… Global warming is not only a problem that should be controlled by polluting industries or governments, but all the citizens should also be aware of their own responsibilities.

If tourism industry has contributed to the economical growth of many countries around the world, it has somehow contributed as well to the global warming, because of the enormous amount of transportation generated (air – land – see). Environmental nuisances or social disparities have accompanied for some countries this providential manna. NSTRAVEL wants to play a role, certainly humble but responsible in order to reduce this fatal trend.

We were Thai pioneers in ‘off the beaten tracks’ tourism and we want once again to be pioneers in a new way of operating our programs. Beyond our concern for our environment, we also express concern for the local economies. We have thus added a human dimension to the environmental one, when preparing our tours. We always give our preference to small hotels, restaurants, local guides or local providers. We effectively prefer to support local companies or families which contribute to fix manpower locally and therefore play an active role against rural depopulation.

Our tours ‘350.org’ involve the following elements:
-    As often as possible use of public transportation
-    As much as possible use of local manpower
-    Use of local infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, etc.)

By operating so, we limit new emission of CO² particles and we contribute to fix local populations in their respective region, whilst stimulation local micro economies.

The city of Ayuthaya was once famous in all South East Asia. It was (during its Golden Age) even courted by big Asian and European nations. Louis the XIV had resident ambassadors in Ayuthaya, whereas Siamese ambassadors were sent to Versailles. Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, and other nations had once permanent counters in the legendary Siamese kingdom.

Founded in the Fourteen Century by king U-Thong, Ayutthaya became one of the most important cities in all East. Under king Naresuan the Great, at the end of the Sixteen century, Ayutthaya controlled a huge territory far over Siamese borders, including even Northern kingdom of Lanna, part of Burma and Cambodia. Ayutthaya had become a kind of Eastern Tenochtitlan, proudly glistening from its superb temples and golden chedis.

The last attack coming from Burma at the end of the Eighteen century (some years before French Revolution) was the death knell for Ayutthaya. Its fall sounded as Doomsday for Siam. The capital was never rebuilt and after the sack, the Court moved down in search of a place to build a new capital. They finally settled down definitely in Bangkok.

The city of Ayutthaya was classified by UNESCO in 1991 as ‘World Heritage’. The summer royal residence of Bang Pa-In is worth to visit as well. It shelters some lavishly decorated pavilions in a very well groomed garden. Opposite banks of the river stands one of the most outstanding buildings of the country: A neo gothic style Buddhist monastery. Western tourists should not miss this place for it is really unusual.
